Team Building Days Out

Getting Active in 2020

Getting fit and healthy in the New Year can be tough! Going to the gym at the crack of dawn or heading out in the dark for a run is not many people's idea of fun.

No one said exercise has to be boring. Try something different this year, get active whilst doing something you enjoy!  To give you some ideas, here are five of our outdoor activities that can help you get a little fitter whilst having fun.

1 - Walking with a Twist – Cryptic Chase

This outdoor activity not only gets your feet moving but gets your brain in gear too. Cryptic Chase is a fun, puzzle solving outdoor activity that will have you exploring our grounds looking for cryptic clues, riddles and teasers at each location of our chase. By the end of Cryptic Chase you will have walked around 1.5 miles, but trust us, the distance won’t even cross your mind as you’ll be having too much fun!

Cryptic Chase is perfect for all ages and abilities and is a great activity that the whole family can take part in.

If you’re looking to reach new heights, our high ropes course is the perfect outdoor activity that will not only challenge your physical strength, but your mental strength too.

Our high rope challenges, based up in the trees of our woodland activity centres, will put your upper and lower body strength to the test. You will use muscle you didn’t even know you had!  Once you’re up in the trees it’s all about concentration and balance so get ready to work out those core muscles as you navigate your way through the course.

High ropes is a great alternative to the gym but having said all this, we have a variety of low and high ropes courses for all abilities so don’t worry, you don’t have to be in peak physical fitness to take part.

Our top 5 stag do activities for a great stag party

Gearing up for the big day? Dressing up, sending invites, finding the right location… that’s right, we’re talking ‘The Stag Do’.

If you’re the best man looking for the best stag do ideas, you’ve come to the right place. From stag do games and challenges to more active stag do ideas, we’ve got everything you need for an unforgettable send-off. Here’s a top five taster of our favourite activities, found at the best stag do locations in Leeds and Harrogate – Ripley Castle and Hazelwood Castle.

Like what you see? We can even tailor a package of activities to create the ultimate stag weekends and stag night.

1) Paintballing

Forget about stag do fancy dress – with paintballing, you can paint your clothes with colour instead. Paintballing gets your adrenaline pumping and your fight or flight response raring to go. So gear up, get going, and lead the groom to victory (or defeat!)

Pick your team and sign up here.

2) Cryptic Chase

Still feeling competitive? Get into the mind games. With our Cryptic Chase, it’s time to separate the men from the boys with cryptic clues, riddles, puzzles and teasers – all while being up against the clock. You can use the time to bond or battle… and most importantly, see if you can get on our Cryptic Chase Leaderboard.

Find out more about Cyrptic Chase.

3) Tomahawk Axe Throwing

If your groom is a Game of Thrones kind of guy, Tomahawk Axe Throwing is one activity you won’t want to skip. Go wild and aim for a bullseye… moving from a simple overarm throw to even backwards and double axe throws, if you’re feeling brave.

Find out more about Axe Throwing.

4) Raft Building

Sink or swim? With Raft Building, you decide… and hopefully you’ll be floating instead! Get creative – and clever – with the barrels, logs and ropes you’re given, and you’ll only have the clock to beat as you build a raft to safety.

5) Quad Biking

Better on land? We’ve got you covered. Head for the hills of Harrogate to go faster and further on the muddiest tracks and terrains around. Roaring around the Ripley Castle Estate, it’s one of the most fun stag do activities we’ve got to offer, with the most incredible scenery too.

Let’s go Quad Biking.

Can’t pick just one? No need to: our Classic Stag Do packages offer two adventurous activities, while our VIP packages bump up to three in one stag do.

View our stag packages and keep an eye on our social media channels for updates and exciting offers.

3 exciting easter activities your kids will love

There’s only one thing that we think of when it comes to U.K. school holidays: adventure. If you ask us, half term is the best time to get your children trying new experiences – which means getting them away from the TV and out into nature. We’ve filled our Easter holidays camp for kids with exciting and enriching Easter activities they’ll want to get outside for… from our legendary Lawn Olympics right down to the basics of daring tree climbing and lighting fires, based at the magical Ripley Castle in Harrogate.

Discover a few of our favourite half-term activities we’ve got lined up for our Easter kids holiday camp below…

1) Body Zorbing

Searching for things to do in Harrogate that your kids won’t be able to stop talking about? Body Zorbing is bound to be one! Also known as Bubble Football, Body Zorbing is just as fun as it looks – allowing kids to compete on an equal level while they’re in a safe, bouncy bubble. With a range of games and challenges, we focus on making sure everyone is involved and engaged.

2) Archery

Robin Hood, watch out… With a range of different sized bows and colourful targets, we’re ready to make Archery an activity your kids love. Focusing on calmness, control and concentration, Archery is much more than just hitting a target – building essential skills for kids of any age from 8 upwards.

3) Leap of Faith and Tree Climbing

If you go up, you’ve got to come down – and we’ve cracked how to keep both bits exciting during the Easter school holidays. In our Harrogate holidays camp, your kids will be able to learn how to climb trees like Tarzan… and later in the week, they’ll get the chance to safely leap off 35 foot poles, just like he swings through the branches. A great way to build confidence and trust in a safe yet exciting environment.

Ready to book a spot? Designed for kids ages 8 – 15, our Easter break kids camp is jampacked full of fun, with a range of skill-building and adrenaline-boosting activities. The whole camp costs £120 and runs for four days from the 23rd to the 26th April, and day camp is also available for £40 per day.

See our school holiday camps page for more info, and view the easter timetable (PDF).

Introduce them to the Great Yorkshire Outdoors

Things to do in Harrogate - Kids & Families

The good old Yorkshire Outdoors, you just can’t beat it. It’s beautiful, wild and right on the doorstep of the most historic towns. However, with a young family, it can be a little harder to find the best areas that will accommodate everyones needs, especially with little legs and attention spans. And so I thought I’d tell you a little about our top favourite places to save you the trial and error!

When we originally set up Live For Today we always had a vision to put the kids market first, deliver the best birthday parties and activity days to get them excited about the great outdoors. Numerous parties later and we are achieving our goal, so many kids now know the difference between kindling and tinder and how to navigate from one place to another using only a compass and map.

Being a dad of 2, I want to make sure my kids get outdoors as much as possible and although our one year old does also know how to work an iPad, he is still so curious about muddy puddles, broken sticks and generally running around in the places he’s not usually allowed to go. Erin on the other hand is turning 6 this year and she is getting more and more adventurous every day, it’s always a perk to come to daddys work and swing from the tree’s - literally!

SO - what else can you do to encourage the kids to get outside and active?

Harrogate is a beautiful town but there still isn’t enough for the kids and families to do together. I wanted to write this blog more to share (from our own experience) where is best to go if you want to have a good day out.

1 - Harrogate Holiday Camps

Give your little one a week to remember. Lighting Fires, Climbing Tree's, Building Dens and Body Zorbing. We have the lot as part of our School Holiday Camps.

We have even increased the fun further this year by including Dart Football and our brand new and mysterious Escape Rooms.

School Holiday Camps Harrogate

2 - Harrogate Climbing Centre

I debated putting this one into my blog (being competition and all) but actually do you know what, it’s too good to leave out. I used to work there before setting up Live For Today and I see what passion and standards these guys give to their kids sessions, tasters and parties. The centre has a variety of different climbs and if you’re looking to get your kids into a climbing club then this is the place to go, it’s a league above any other walls I’ve visited and also has a great cafe (Indulge) onsite.

Visit Harrogate Climbing Centre

3 - Brimham Rocks

Moving on perfectly from above is then to get the kids into the actual outdoors, get them to experience real rock, feel the grit between their fingers. If you haven’t been to Brimham before then you are missing out, it’s the perfect place to get lost (literally) and explore all the incredible rock formations around…there is also a rock called the dancing bear. Parking is cheap and free to National Trust Members.

Visit Brimham Rocks

Brimham Rocks

4 - Ripley Castle Gardens

I’m not being biased because our office is based here but if you’ve never been into Ripley gardens then you’re missing out. Perfect on a summers day and you will be amazed at the views on offer. Wonder around the lakes, through the secret culinary gardens and finishing off by exiting through the woods onto the big lawned area where there is giant connect 4, jenga etc for the kids to play. We like to do family cycles along the new cycle path which connects directly in from Harrogate, it’s pretty level all the way so the kids can do it and then we reward them with the famous Ripley Ice cream at the end.

Visit Ripley Castle

Ripley Castle Gardens

5 - Winkies

I love winkies, it’s based in Starbeck and probably doesn’t get a look in as much with the likes of Kidzplay etc but Winkies is a really enjoyable soft play centre. It just has a really good feel about the place, mainly because it’s split into 2 sections. One is the slides, ball pools etc an the other side is a pre-build kitchen/house and sensory area. It suits both my kids and I can kind of chill in the middle and go to both areas…winner!

Visit Winkies

Winkies Harrogate

6 - Mother Shiptons

Being a knaresborough lad Mother Shiptons is a regular spot for us but I had the privilege of meeting the new owner last year who is improving the area massively. It now has a new play park and regularly runs different themed events such as ‘Peter Rabbits Easter Adventure’ ‘Robin Hood Summer Holidays’ etc etc.

One other really amazing things about Mother Shiptons of course is the cave and petrifying well, we do it every time 😀

Visit Mother Shiptons

Mother Shiptons Cave

7 - Live For Today

Ok, so I couldn’t not include our plans for the future. We are hitting 2018 with some really big ideas for the little explorers out there. I have never been more excited about our new ‘Escape The Island Party’ which opens next weekend and we are also in the process of launching some brand new kids holiday camps. The ideas are still coming together but it will include some out of the box activities such as Bubble Football, Adventure Painting and Bush Tucker Trials. If you are interested don’t forget to drop us an email and we can send you some information across

Contact Us

It’s not only about offering what we think are the best kids parties in Harrogate and soon to be the best summer camps, but we also do really good family days out. We have so many families join us to do a joint Archery Sessions or get lost on our cryptic chase and the feedback is always 5 stars.

Live For Today

8 - Stump Cross Caverns

Boasting more history than we could ever dream of are these million year old caverns. A little bit more of a drive away from Harrogate but an amazing place for the kids to see. Get them into Caving early and teach them the difference between a Stalagmite and Stalactite. You never know in the future they might join us on one of our real caving adventures.

Visit Stumpcross Caverns

Stumpcross Caverns

9 - Billy Bobs Parlour

Good old Billy Bobs, such a treat for our kids. I won’t lie, usually it’s so busy but at the time so much fun. There are rope swings, barn slides and tractors for the kids to play on. There is also a proper American Themed Diner which does the absolute best chocolate milkshakes…oh and hot dogs. Prices are pretty reasonable and 100% worth it, a must is to do the slide as one big family and see who is first to the bottom.

Visit Billy Bobs

Billy Bobs Parlour

10 - Pine Woods in Harrogate

I’m gonna finish with a freebie and the one we probably do the most, wander up and down the pine woods. We walk from the top of Valley Gardens and make it to Betty’s at Harlow Carr for a takeaway Hot Chocolate. Ok there are a few shoulder rides along the way but there is nothing better than pointing out the different tree’s and birds that keep flying past, also the shop at Harlow Carr has to be the the most incredible gift shop, selling all the cool toys we were used to as kids.

Visit Pine Woods

Pine Woods Harrogate

So there you go, a few things I personally think help to get the kids outdoors in and around the Harrogate Area, I hope you enjoyed reading it. Hopefully there will be more popping up in the near future.

Here’s to the Adventures,

Marc Wise
